THE NATIONAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN: 2019 UPDATE

(June 21, 2019)

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds tremendous promise to benefit nearly all aspects of society, including the economy, healthcare, security, the law, transportation, even technology itself. On February 11, 2019, the President signed Executive Order 13859, Maintaining American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence. This order launched the American AI Initiative, a concerted effort to promote and protect AI technology and innovation in the United States. The Initiative implements a whole-of-government strategy in collaboration and engagement with the private sector, academia, the public, and like-minded international partners. Among other actions, key directives in the Initiative call for Federal agencies to prioritize AI research and development (R&D) investments, enhance access to high-quality cyberinfrastructure and data, ensure that the Nation leads in the development of technical standards for AI, and provide education and training opportunities to prepare the American workforce for the new era of AI.

NITRD NEWSLETTER – OCTOBER 2018

(October 16, 2018)

Welcome to the October 2018 issue of the NITRD Leads IT quarterly newsletter of the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Program.

“I am thrilled to be the NITRD NCO Director! I have participated in NITRD for many years, leading involvement from my home agency, NIST, where I have also been honored to work directly with several past NITRD Directors… We have come a long way, but there is still much to do. Everyone wins when we have an inclusive image of a STEM professional as we will increase the talent pool, foster critical STEM skills among the broader community, and promote a healthier, more culturally-sensitive workplace. An inclusive workforce provides a rich set of perspectives that enable innovation and creative discovery…” – Ms. Kamie Roberts (Director of the National Coordination Office for Networking and Information).

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ON UPDATE TO THE 2016 NATIONAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN

(September 26, 2018)

On behalf of the National Science and Technology Council’s (NSTC) Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence (Select Committee), NITRD NCO requests input from all interested parties on the National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan. Through this Request for Information (RFI), NITRD NCO seeks input from the public, including those directly performing Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and development (R&D) and directly affected by such R&D, on whether the strategic plan should be revised and, if so, the ways in which it may be improved. This includes suggestions as to the addition, removal, or modification of strategic aims, comments as to existing strategic aims as well as their past or future implementation by the Federal government. The public input provided in response to this RFI will inform NITRD NCO and the Select Committee in updating the National Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Strategic Plan.

OPERATIONALIZING SOFTWARE-DEFINED NETWORKS: SUMMARY OF LARGE SCALE NETWORKING WORKSHOP

(September 24, 2018)

In the context of advancing technology development and innovation in support of American leadership in science and technology, software defined networking (SDN) enables broad flexibility in network programming and operation. In early SDN implementations, this flexibility has proved beneficial in supporting collaboration and innovation across university campuses and regional and national research and education networks. As a result, there is significant interest across academia, industry, and government in broadening SDN use, along with expanding R&D in enabling SDN technologies.

SUPPLEMENT TO THE PRESIDENT’S FY2019 BUDGET

(August 21, 2018)

Information technology (IT) is perhaps the most broadly transformative technology ever invented, with impacts on defense, security, energy, healthcare, and more. Innovation in IT continually enables pivotal new applications that advance U.S. national priorities and Federal agency missions. For 27 years, the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program has been the Nation’s primary source of federally funded research and development (R&D) on networking and information technology. The Program maximizes coordination of Federal IT R&D to optimize Federal investments that support agency missions and contribute to the public good.
